Guide To Village Types
There are two major types of villages that you should be building in the game. An offense and a defense village. Having a balanced village is useless, and after your first village you should never have a balanced village again.
Offense Village
An offensive village is a village that is dedicated to building purely offensive troops. This is a very simple concept for most to grasp. You should be building no defensive troops. You should be aiming for 6000+ axes, 3000+LC, 200+ Rams (No more than 300!). This is your primary offense size and is what you will use on most of your attacks once you have more than 2 villages. It usually takes around 8-9 days to max out an offense village. (Build times become important the longer you play)
Defense Village
A defense village is a village dedicated to building purely defensive troops. While this seems simple, it's actually more complicated than an offense village, as there is a special defensive troop that some people overlook that tend to be VERY important. Most people build a balance of spears and swords or 10k swordsman and 10 k spearman in a defense village, which is fine, but in a time of war, or aggressive fighting, a defense village like this will eventually be out-built by an offensive village purely due to build times. While it takes 9 days to max an offense village, it takes 18 days to max out a defense village of this type. The reason behind this is simple, you need to use the same building to build both spearmen and swordsmen, basically cutting your production speed in half compared to an offense village.
The solution to this is using Heavy Calvary. HC are a defensive troop that you build in your stables. The only problem is that 1 HC is worth about 4 swordsmen, while using 6 population. This means overall, it will be less effective maxing a village with spearmen and HC. HC has another important attribute that has saved many people in the past. Speed. Travel speed is important when you need to move defense quickly. An attacker has an advantage in that they can attack whenever they want, and a defender may not be online when the attacks start. HC allows you some time to mobilize some sort of stacked defense on a village that comes under attack if you weren't around to instantly send defense where you need it to be. Using HC tends to be a choice more than a rule of thumb. Some people hate using them as they don't like giving up the effective defense of a village, while others use HC almost primarily, as you can move defense around really fast and create a huge stack of defense. The debate can go either way, so I say it's more about your play style than anything else, and what you feel most comfortable using. If you're in a real hostile area, and people who you attack, attack you back a lot, HC may help you ensure you are stacking defense quickly. Where as if you're in a passive area and don't really suffer from many incoming attacks, spears/swords are the strong combo, though slower.
Why balanced villages are useless
The main reason that balanced villages are useless is because you can't "stack" offense like you can defense. So that means if you attack with a small offensive force you aren't hitting the target village with a lot of power as the amount of casualties you cause is relative to how many troops you send. If you don't overwhelm the enemy with your offense, he will lose less troops. If they stack their defense from other villages into the one you're attacking, they will repel your attack easily. So you will either want your village dedicated completely to offense, or not. There is no in between.
