Spearman-SP-Multipurpose

The spearman is useful as a defense or offense unit early on. It is cheap to make and comes as standard with the barracks. After around 300 points it is only useful as anti cavalry. Personally I don't bother. I just research sword straight away.

Swordsman-SW-Defense

A good defense unit up until you get heavy cavalry. Great in large numbers, especially for putting in your smaller villages. Note that archers have the same defense and cost a lot more.

Axeman-AX-Offense

A good but short lived offense unit. Has large attack, and is quite fast, too. A great cheap attack unit but NEVER use as defense.

Archer-AR-Defense

A useless unit unless you lack a certain resource. It has same attack as the SW so don't bother.

CAVALRY

Scout-SC-Esponiage

Useful for finding out a village's troop levels, building levels, resources and loyalty. Can only be killed by other scouts. Overall one of the best units in a tribal war.

Light Cavalry-LC-Offence or Defense

Great for farming because of their large haul. Fast and strong these are the best farmers in the game.

Mounted Archer-MC-Offense

Good for making walls a mundane thing as they reduce the defence bonus to other troops. Also good for defeating troops over the wall.

Heavy Cavalry-HC-Multipurpose

The best conventional unit in tribalwars. With 200 general defence and 100 attack, it is incredibly versatile. Being cavalry it is speedy, but use light cavalry first because of their lower defense.

SIEGE AND SPECIAL

Ram-RM-Offence

Destroys walls completely. Amount of rams per level depleted depends on luck...I think. Quite good but not great unit.

Catapult-CT-Multipurpose

The catapult can reduce building's levels. This also depends on luck. Also their 100 defence is a good alternative to HC.

Paladin-PD-Special

The paladin is a mysterious unit, I don't particularly know what it does.

Nobleman-NB-Special

This unit decreases a village's loyalty. When loyalty reaches zero, the village is yours. Also it has 100 defence.
